Services for Library Users with Disabilities

The Library, Arts & Culture Department is committed to providing equal access to collections and services. If you or someone you know needs assistance using the Library, one of these services may help.

PERSONAL ASSISTANCE AT THE LIBRARY
Library staff at all sites will gladly help you retrieve materials from the shelves, and we will carry your materials to your car.
GLAS - Glendale Library Adaptive Services
This area of the Central Library brings together services, adaptive equipment, and collections of interest to people with disabilities. Tables for technology equipment in the GLAS area are height adjustable for wheelchair access. Library staff will demonstrate use of GLAS equipment. Ask for assistance at the Reference Desk.

GLAS is located on the ground floor, just past the check out desk on the left.

This high-technology room houses two adjustable computer workstations designed to meet the information needs of people with physical, visual, hearing, and learning disabilities. The computer workstations include scanning capabilities and the following software programs:

Dragon Naturally Speaking -- recognizes speech Easy Tutor -- reads scanned material JAWS -- reads screens WYNN (What You Need Now Wizard) -- helps students to read and write ZoomText Xtra -- expands print size Microsoft Office Suite

WORKSHOPS - Learn to use computers and the Internet
Our popular "Computer Club for Seniors" teaches the basics of computer use and Web navigation. Sign up in the Library. If you have difficulty getting to the Library to sign up for workshops, please call (818) 548-2027.

These workshops are also available on video and DVD in closed-captioned format.

The Library is assessing the need for signing at Library programs. Call (818) 548-2042 for information.
READER MAGNIFIER
CCTV with magnifier enlarges image of books, magazines, personal mail, handwork, crosswords, etc. on an adjustable reading/working surface.
ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY IN THE GLENDALE FAMILY LEARNING CENTER
Large print keyboards and trackball mice are available for use on Learning Center computers. The Learning Center is located on the Upper Level of the Central Library.

LIBRARY MATERIALS IN ACCESSIBLE FORMATS
Visit the audio-visual areas at all Library sites for videos and DVDs of your favorite movies and documentaries. Listen to best-sellers, classics, and non-fiction on audiocassettes and CDs.

The following books and alternate formats are shelved in the GLAS area at Central Library:

  • "Steady Readers" - Audiocassettes recorded at a 10 - 15% slower rate than standard audiobooks.
  • Described Videos and DVDs - Specially labeled videos and DVDs contain audible descriptions of scene content.
  • Large Type Books - Enjoy our large collection of familiar and new titles in larger print.
  • Braille Talking Books - For use with Braille cassette players.
REMOTE ACCESS TO LIBRARY ONLINE RESOURCES
Search the Library's collection of books and other materials online, and find information in a variety of databases from home or office. Must have current Library borrower's card to place holds or to access most databases.
