Computers and Internet Access at the Glendale Public Library - FAQs


Public Computers
Computers for the public are located at all Glendale Public Library sites. All Library computers may be used for word processing and printing and to access the Library's catalog. Specific computer workstations are available for Internet browsing and email at all GPL sites.

At the Central Library, computers for Internet browsing are located on the second floor (Upper Level). You must reserve time on these computers.

Computers on the first floor are intended for use of Library online databases and may also be used for word processing. No reservations are needed; these computers are first come, first served.

Laptops and Wireless at ALL Sites

  • Laptops may be plugged into any available electrical outlet.
  • Please ask our staff if you cannot find an electrical outlet.
  • The Library does not have network ports available for laptops to connect to the Internet.


Reserving a Computer
You do not need a library card or other identification to use the computers. Central Library: For the first half hour, signups for computers are taken at the desk near the building's front entrance. For the remainder of the day, sign up at the Upper Level Service Desk. No telephone reservations. Sessions are limited to two 30-minute session or one 1-hour session per day.

Branch libraries each have their own procedures for reserving computers. Contact your branch for details.

Children and the Internet
Children in 8th grade or lower must use the Internet workstations located in the Children's Room. We ask that parents read our statement
"Children & The Internet", on the Library's Internet Policy page.

Microsoft Office Suite and Other Software

All Glendale Public Library locations have computers with software for personal use, including:

Microsoft Word™ for word processing and resumes
Microsoft Excel™ for spreadsheets and graphs
Microsoft Access™ for databases
Microsoft PowerPoint™ for presentations
Computers at the Central Library also have:
Encarta - Online encyclopedia™
Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing - typing tutorial, all levels, in Spanish and English
Computers in the Learning Center at the Central Library also have:

Printing and Downloading

At the Central Library, print release workstations are located:

Main Floor Circulation Desk (near main entrance).

In the computer lab area near the Service Desk.

Cost to print: $.20 for b/w, $1.00 for color.

Downloading

Download files to your diskette or flash drive (memory stick) from most Library computers except those devoted to the online catalog. You may bring your own diskette or flash drive or purchase a diskette for $1.00 or a flash drive for $15.00 at the Library.
